Blocks 4
Ray Fisher Sculpture

Sculpture Gallery

The common thread in all of my wood sculptures has been blocks. Various species, usually left over from larger projects. Whether the work is abstract or representational the foundation is always the use of blocks, cut and contoured to suit each design.

In my series entitled, "Earth Dancers", the blocks are shaped to look like feathers or quills or even grass. These sculptures resemble kachinas but are meant to be ambiguous and do not represent any specific kachina. I lay up small geometric shapes, (blocks), like a mosaic to create larger patterns that emulate primitive designs. I use different species of wood to achieve color and contrast. The full body sculptures may contain several hundred blocks of wood and stand nearly eight feet high.
